Tower of Mammal New Erections is noise rock band The Locust's second album with ANTI- Records, a spinoff of Epitaph Records. It was released on March 20, 2007 and is the longest album the band has released, clocking in at 23 minutes. Production was handled by Alex Newport. It would be far too easy to write a review of The Locust that loses focus of the main objective. To spend too long discussing how they’re really crazy because of the costumes they wear and are really noisy, that they sound like a “car crash” or any number of pseudo-metaphorical comparisons that make it seem like the hipster idiot reviewer put the album on, listened to it once, in the background, and went “woah, that’s so mental, how can I describe how mental that is, probably by speaking absolute bollocks for an entire review”. I shan’t insult your intelligence; this is about the sound first and the theatricality second (although I would never deny the brilliance and entertainment value of the artwork/song titles/costumes, it is certainly secondary) . This album is a concise distillation of what makes The Locust so damn brilliant, and perfectly demonstrates why they stand head and shoulders above the recent influx of Casio-grind; Rolo Tomassi, Cutting Pink with Knives, Trencher, who seem to spend too much time aping The Locust, instead of using the template and developing their own style. The band is tighter than they have ever been and demonstrate exactly how tight in the first 10 seconds of the album, almost a statement of intent. They finally manage to strike the perfect balance between the two conflicting elements of their sound. It contains plenty of the faster screamy sections that they are so well known for, but it’s when they slow down and explore the interplay between the bass and the synth, accompanied by pounded drum thuds and cymbal crashes, notably on “The Unwilling...Led by the Unqualified…Doing the Unnecessary…” that they really show themselves to be a particularly special band, and one worthy of more than just “Oh yeah that crazy band who wear silly costumes and make a lot of noise”. These explorations of soundscaping with low end frequencies really came into it’s own on 2005’s “Safety Second, Body Last” but it’s because on “New Erections” that they manage to balance the shredding off kilter fast parts with the slow passages that it is frankly a superior release. The biggest change to their sound however is the vocals, cleaner than on any of their other releases. In opener “AOTKPTA” the chanted “We’ll bury this city in trash” seems purposely designed for a sing-along with the audience, not something that happens all that often at Locust gigs, a welcome change indeed. If you’re new to this band or this style of music, and are interested then this a very good place to start, showing the true versatility of masters of noise (the control that The Locust show over their instruments and the potential noises that each instrument offers is phenomenal) at their best.
