There are many reasons given by fans and critics as to why Magnum never attained the popularity that they seemed destined to achieve. This album was the first to show exactly what Magnum could do and once you have listened to it you will wonder how they didn’t go on to join the rock gods of the 80’s and 90's.

Magnum had released a few albums prior to Storytellers night with mixed success but from the very first track ‘How Far Jerusalem’ you are filled with energy and yearning to learn the words and join Bob Catley in his recitement of well formulated lyrics. Not forgetting Tony Catlin who in those days sported a huge beard and long hair which would not have been out of place alongside the ZZ Top lads!

The first two tracks succeed in building you up to what will probably go down in history as Magnums greatest ever track On A storytellers Night, a haunting intro followed by full on rock is a combination that Magnum are renowned for and in this track they achieve perfection. AS the tracks play one by one you will be left wondering when is there going to be a dud. To be honest there isn’t one. All of the tracks are strong as individual tracks and combine together to make one awesome album. It is no wonder that the fans of Magnum consider this their best work and for people who have never heard of Magnum before then this is the place to start from here you can either go back over to review where the group came from and how they developed or travel foreward to see why they never really peaked to any great height, but unlike many of the others they are still playing now and seemingly producing top rated tracks again.

Trying to think of one song to sample for people to taste what Magnum are about is probably the hardest of any album I have reviewed so because most of the tracks are obvious I will recommend ‘Before first light’ as the track for people new to Magnum to listen too. Enjoy this pacy track and beautifully sung lyrics as these are the trademark of the group.
