21. City HallTenacious D is the self named album of the budding comedy rock act headed up by actor Jack Black. Black, combined with his long time best friend Kyle Gass, bring their unique brand of music to the forefront and have carved their niche within the rock world. To put it simply, Tenacious D is an album that offers something a little bit different to music fans.
The album provides a great deal of comedy with a unique type of rock. From the band’s first days on the HBO comedy “Mr. Show”, they have been a popular underground hit within the music world. With their album, Jack Black and Kyle Gass brought themselves out of the underground and squarely into the mainstream. That comes as no surprise to fans of Tenacious D, as the cult following had grown to almost epic proportions.
Tenacious D wanted to make a point with their first album that they were not only comedians, but actually musicians, as well. It may have come as a surprise to some, but hardcore Tenacious D fans felt no surprise when they heard the album. In a very unique way, Tenacious D managed to create an album that was both hysterical and solid on the musical front. Their self titled work was one of the best rock albums to come out in 2001.
Black and Gass got a little help from their highly respected friends in creating this rock comedy masterpiece. Among those that make an appearance on the album are Dave Grohl and Ken Andrews, who gained fame as a part of the band, Failure Fame. The marquee song on this album is "Tribute", a long song that is particularly pleasing to the younger crowd. Other great songs on the album are "Explosivo", "Lee", and "City Hall".
The best quality of this album’s sound is the fact that it commands a very professional presence. There is no doubting that the music is Tenacious D’s primary focus, with the humor and storytelling coming somewhere after that. That ability to tell a story through song is one of the defining features of Tenacious D’s music, though. Like many of the great rock band before them, Tenacious D masters the art of the ballad. They do it with their own distinctive style, though. The first album is an impressively funny group of songs that will make you ask for more. Whether you like humor or rock, you'll be pleased.
